5 Things I've Learnt Since Starting A Small Business

1 - Things will be slow to begin with and it will take time to build up a customer base.

Things started out very slow for me and at first it did start getting me down, how I was putting so much time and effort into making everything the best I could just for nothing to sell. It took me a lot of advertising before I started to see sales happening, but I have now built up a good customer base and sales are really starting to pick up again, time and patience is the key to success.

2 - You will spend way more money at the beginning before you start even begin to see a profit.

I started Kays Angel Scents properly on the 1st September, and it's only now that I am starting to be able to save some money instead of putting it all back into the business buying new oils/moulds/wax. It takes time before you start to see any profit at all, so be prepared when starting a small business to spend quite a bit of your own money upfront at first. Hopefully by this time next year I will have a nice amount saved up....at least that is the plan anyway haha.

3 - People won't like the fact you are trying to better your life by starting up a business.

This is something that I have had to experience first hand since starting up Kays Angel Scents, I have had my pages reported on Facebook and constantly being digged out at on my personal Facebook as well. This was all because they didn't like the fact I had started to do personalised items alongside my wax melts, so they were trying to stop me from getting any sales in the process....which they failed at, because it only made more people want to buy from me in the end.

4 - Your products will slowly start taking over the house, and slowly resemble a bomb site.

If someone told me a few months ago that my clean, tidy and organised bedroom was gonna resemble a mini shop with products and packaging all stacked up, I can tell you now I would have laughed so hard at them! Fast forward a few weeks and that is exactly what one side of my bedroom looks like, alongside my photography light and little set up to take all the photos for my shop, I really do need to get organising everything so I'm not tripping over everything haha.

5 - Support other small businesses as much as you can.

This is a big one for me, before starting Kays Angel Scents, I never actually realised how much time and effort goes into small business's but now that I do know, I always try and buy small as I know every penny counts especially in the lead up to Christmas. The two small business's I tend to buy from the most at the moment are Little Belle Melts and Dorkface as I love both there products, and love seeing how they are growing!

Kays Angel Scents

So it's official, I have started up a small business all in memory of my sister Kayleigh.

I've been wanting to start something up for a while now, but it's never seemed like the right time what with everything that has been going on in this crazy world. But we are getting closer and closer to the 1 year anniversary of my sister's death, and launching it now just felt like the right time for me.

It started off being called "Kays Angel Soaps" but has just recently changed to "Kays Angel Scents" and on the website at the moment is a selection of homemade soaps, we have a bit of a sale on them at the moment, as currently trying to make way for new stock coming on the 1st September.

www.kaysangelscents.co.uk

Any money made between the 22nd and 23rd August will be being donated to the "Kayleigh Fund" which will be getting her a forever headstone up at her resting place.

I would be forever grateful if you could give the online shop a little look, and if you see something you like the look of, maybe even place an order?

New Flavours From Niederegger

Niederegger Marzipan

Niederegger 2020 Flavours

If you have been reading my blog for some time now, you will already know that I am a massive fan of anything marzipan....if it's got marzipan in, then I'm a happy person. So when I was sent a package of chocolate-covered marzipan, I was one happy girl! Even happier when it contained some of there new flavours for 2020.

Niederegger always do the best selection of chocolates, and they certainly didn't disappoint this time either. From there mini bakery-style chocolates to there banana loafs as well and then you also have the bigger loafs in a selection of flavours as well.

Mini Bakery Desserts Selection

This is a perfect little selection that recreates a trip to a New York Coffee Shop so that you can get a little taste of everything that includes blueberry cheesecake, toffee, chocolate cupcake and also tiramisu. I found it so hard to choose my favourite out of this selection.....so I just enjoyed them all a bit at a time.....we all need a treat some times don't we?!

Chocolate Banana Mini Loafs

These I think were hands down my favourite's that were in the package I received, usually, I would say chocolate and banana just wouldn't work together, but these are just amazing! These start at a low price of just £4.50 a box and are definitely worth it, I can see myself buying some of these soon, maybe to put towards a little chocolate hamper for someone.

Niederegger Loafs

Niederegger Loafs
As always whenever I get one of these packages gifted to me, I always share it with a family friend who also loves marzipan, so I am pretty sure she has been enjoying the three loafs as those are what I gave her this time around. I did, however, enjoy the stick'n go bar that was in there as well, perfect for an on the go snack, or when you just want something as a little treat.

You can find all these products over on the chocolatesdirect website, where there is also a variety of other Niederegger chocolates.

*items in this post were gifted, but all thoughts are those of my own*

The Lockdown Tag

Lockdown, tag,
I first saw this lockdown tag over on https://nicbakes.blogspot.com/ so be sure to go and check out her answers to this lockdown tag as well.

1 - Come on, own up, did you stockpile anything?
Nothing at all, the only thing I did make sure to keep on top of though was all my medication as that is definitely something I can't be without. But food-wise, nope I didn't go all crazy like the world was going to end, I just got the essentials that I needed at the time.

2 - Have you discovered a new hobby?
I certainly have, well its more a case of making use of my digital photography qualification and design as well. I've been putting my time into designing personalised invoices and business cards, not only for myself but for a friend as well. I am also in the process of setting up my own little business in memory of my sister, which is why my blog and Instagram have been pretty quiet the last week or so (more so my Instagram).

3 - Where is the first place you will go once the restrictions are 100% lifted?
100% the beach, it's literally the only place I have wanted to go to for the past few months but for obvious reasons I have stayed away, by now I would have also done a trip back to Newport in South Wales to see friends and spent the day over at Cwmbran Boating Lake but obviously with the whole lockdown restrictions, that has had to be put on hold for now.

4 - Loungewear or normal clothes for a day of isolating?
This is a hard one for me, as some days I like to be proper cosy and just lounge about in my pyjama shorts and t-shirt, but then other days I like to put on a comfy pair of leggings and a top as it helps me to feel more productive and I tend to get a lot more done on those days as well.

5 - Have you been wearing makeup whilst staying at home?
Nope, nothing at all. I have been sticking to a skincare routine and just moisturiser throughout the day to keep my skin hydrated, and my skin has thoroughly thanked me for this as it is the best it looked in months!

6 - How many zoom quizzes have you done, and did you enjoy them?
Absolutely none haha. No one I know does Zoom calls or the quizzes on them so have had no invites haha, but that really doesn't bother me much to be honest.
"hope you have all been keeping safe during this pandemic"
7 - Did you give in to the hype and bake banana bread?
Not at all! Don't get me wrong I love banana bread, but during lockdown, I have mainly been baking Tottenham cake not only for ourselves but also for others and dropping it off at there doors. I have also made 2 birthday cakes as well as another chocolate cake just to practice, and it came out amazing.

8 - Were you still ordering takeaways, if you did, what was your first one?
I won't lie I did order a few takeaways during the lockdown and my first one was actually a Chinese. I know what you're all probably thinking that China is where the virus started out, but the people who run the Chinese takeaways have lived here probably there whole life and there food is always nice, so I have no problems with ordering from them.

9 - Has your blog/Instagram content had to change since lockdown?
Erm, I wouldn't say it has changed dramatically no, as my content is the stuff that could be done indoors but I have definitely taken a step back from posting as often as I usually would. I do want to get back into a routine of creating content tho, I'm just not sure what route I want to go down with it all at the moment though.

10 - Are you waiting for hairdressers to reopen or have you cut/dyed your own hair?
In terms of getting it cut, I am waiting to get it done by a hairdresser, as I was actually booked in to get it done the Friday before the lockdown and the appointment was cancelled which is understandable. As for dying my hair, I do that myself anyway so nothing has really changed in that sense anyway.

11 - Who have you missed seeing the most?
100% my niece Daisy, for those who have read the last few blog posts, you will know that my sister passed away suddenly in August 2019 and Daisy is her 9-year-old daughter. Obviously, Daisy now lives with her dad but because she has chronic lung disease she has had to be kept isolated during this pandemic, so we haven't been able to see her much or have her come and stay, but it's for the best and she is being kept safe just like my sister would have wanted!

My Monthly Goals For June

Monthly Goals For June

Firstly, how are we already halfway through the year!
I really do wish this year would slow down just a little bit, but saying that hopefully by the end of this year the coronavirus will have gone on its way and we can get life back to normal pre-lockdown.

So I thought I would get back into the swing of things, with one of my favourite posts to read on other blogs, my goals for June.....

Finish a TV Series
I've just finished watching all 5 seasons of Peaky Blinders on Netflix after it was recommended to me as a good watch. I'm so glad I listened because I was hooked right from the first episode, and think I watch all 5 episodes in just over 2 weeks, I really didn't want it to end, but as we know all good things must come to an end at some point.

So for June, I wanna watch another series, perhaps one that I've started in the past but never got round to finishing, I'm thinking either One Tree Hill (amazon prime), Gossip Girl or maybe The Vampire Diaries.

Are there any series you would recommend me to watch?

Plan Blog Content
I have really been struggling lately to come up with any kind of blog content, it's like my mind just goes blank the minute I sit down and try to write, it just doesn't happen. So although June might be a quiet month for my blog, I'm hopefully *fingers crossed* going to have quite a bit of content pre-written for July, that's the plan anyway!

I also am starting to learn more about SEO and going to be going through my whole blog a bit at a time and updating everything, so that is all SEO friendly and check that no broken links are going on anywhere, I'm also going to be updating some of the blog photos from when I first started blogging as they just ain't my style anymore.

Instagram
I have just started getting back into posting over on my Instagram account, I've found a simple editing process that I am really happy with and it keeps my Instagram looking very consistent. I am even thinking about using Instagram stories more, as it could be a way to help with my confidence, even if I don't show my face in them at first.

My Instagram hasn't been growing as much as I would have liked it too, and this is all my own fault where I haven't been posting regularly, and have very much abandoned it for weeks at a time. I put up a post a while ago, asking for advice good or bad on how I could improve on it, and I was really happy with the few comments that I received on that photo and I am working on the advice I was given as well.

What are your goals for June, leave me the links to your latest blog post
in the comments section below.

Currently Reading

The past few weeks/month's I've really been getting into the habit of reading daily, whether that be in the morning when I wake up, or an hour or so before I go to sleep. I tend to switch between my Kindle and physical copies of books....there's just something satisfying about holding an actual book and seeing how far into the pages you have got through.

So far I currently have one Kindle book and one physical book on the go and seem to alternate between these every other week, I also have a more recent book purchase that I haven't yet started but definitely looking forward to having a read of it. So I thought I would share with you the books I have been reading so far, and my thoughts on them as well.....

The Time Travellers Wife
This has got to be one of my favourites books that I have read this year so far, I really didn't want it to end but as we all know, all good books must come to an end at some point. I think I really need to watch the film of it now to see if it is as good as the book, we all know tho that sometimes books are better though.
It follows the love story between Clare and Henry who both meet when Clare was just six and Henry was thirty-six, but then get married at the ages of twenty-two and thirty. Henry suffers from a rare condition where he's generic clock periodically resets and he finds himself pulled into either he's past or he's future, I won't give too much away but if you haven't already read this book then I would definitely put it on my list of recommendations.

The Grief Survival Guide
This book is my most recent purchase and is by Jeff Brazier, who most of us will know that he has brought he's 2 boys up after they lost their mum Jade Goody to cancer, obviously 8 months on from losing my sister and I'm still grieving every day but learning to cope with it now. So after I saw him promoting he's book over on Instagram, I knew it was something I definitely wanted to have a read of, so went straight on and ordered it. I'm hoping this book with give me some different ways on how to cope with grief but also still remembering my sister and everything about her (not that I will ever forget her).

They Can't Hear Me Cry
This is the book that I'm reading on my kindle, it's a really easy read and something you can pick up easily right from where you left off. It's a book full of little short poems all regarding anxiety and depression and is a really good way just to pass some time when you need to. There's not really much else to say about a book of poems, it's definitely one that gets you thinking though which is a good thing.

Monday Moments #13

Hey there, it’s certainly been a while since I did one of these blog posts, the last one was in fact back in April 2019, which let's face it is well over a year ago now! I swear this year is just flying by, even with this whole lockdown thing happening.

So let me start by saying I will definitely be getting back into doing these on a monthly basis, as I actually miss doing my little catch-up blog posts like this, and letting you know what's been happening in my life just lately.

One || Beating Anxiety
This is something I never in a million years thought I would even be able to type up in a blog post let alone do what I have been doing to try and beat anxiety and everything about it. The one thing about living with anxiety is that it can sometimes make you scared to even do the smallest of things, for example: making a telephone call or sending a voice note, things like that.
Well over the last few weeks, I have really been pushing myself to gain the confidence to do those kinds of things, and I can happily say I have managed to send voice notes to three different people and can now do those without even thinking about it and getting nervous which is something I am really happy about, it may seem like something stupid to most people, but to me, its a really big deal and I’m really proud of myself about it.....next stop is getting a phonecall done, now that’s scary!

Two || Orange Is The New Black
Firstly all I can say is, how come I never started watching this sooner! Netflix has been my lifesaver throughout the past few weeks, and I have literally been binge-watching this of a night time. I am just about to start Season 6 of this, and I think by the time I get to the end of Season 7 I am going to be gutted that I won't have it to watch anymore. I absolutely love the ones who play Nicky and Poussey, their characters are brilliant and the way they come across in the series is really good as well. If anyone has other recommendations of series like this, then please do let me know as I am going to need something else to binge watch very soon!

Three || Self Care
If you are a long term reader of my blog, then you would know that one of my goals for 2020 was to do a bit more self-care and have a good old pamper session one day every week. In my last blog post, Lockdown Pamper Session, I shared with you a couple of products that I have been using to take a bit more care of my skin. I have been loving taking a good hour or so at the end of the week, to give myself a nice face mask and chill out with reading a book or painting my nails and just relaxing ready for another week ahead. During this pandemic and lockdown, it's always a good idea to look after your mental health as well as your physical health, so taken a bit of time out for yourself is always welcome.

I do usually do at least five parts to these Monday Moments blog posts, but with being at home more often just lately, there really isn’t much else I feel needs adding to this blog post at the moment.

I hope you are all keeping safe and well during this crazy time.

Lockdown Pamper Session

Pixi, Barry M, The Ordinary
Now I don't know about any of you, but since this whole lockdown thing and limited outside time, my skin has got so bad and I've had quite a few nasty breakouts appearing. I think this is due to lack of Vitamin D from being outside in the sunshine, as I can't blame it on any products, as I've literally used hardly anything on my face to cause any breakouts. So I was gonna treat myself to a little pamper session, as I have lots of products to choose from in my little stash of items that I can certainly make use of at a time like this.

Pixi Hydrating Milky Cleanser

I recently treated myself to the Hydrating Milky Cleanser by the brand Pixi, after hearing quite a lot of good reviews about it. It always leaves my skin feeling really soft and cleansed after using it, it hasn't majorly cleared my skin up but it has helped slightly, so I will definitely be repurchasing this again once I have used this tube up.

The Ordinary Peeling Solution

Next up I will go in with my Peeling Solution by the brand The Ordinary, I only use this once, maybe twice a week at the most, as it is quite a strong face mask. I was a bit worried about using it at first because of the colour of it, it's like a blood-red haha, I was so worried it was going to stain my face and would leave me looking like a beetroot.....but fear not it doesn't stain your face at all haha.

Barry M Nail Varnishes

Then to finish off my little pamper session, I will then paint my nails with my trusted Barry M nail polishes. I always use the colour Dead Heat for on my toes, I haven't used any other colour on them for years, it's just my go-to colour every time. As for my nails, I go through stages of wearing different colours, but at the moment I am loving light colours to go with the nice summer weather we seem to be having just lately, and the one I used this time was called Freestyle.

Keep Hydrated With Waterdrop

waterdrop, hydrated, water, drinking cubes, microdrink*Items in this post have been gifted, but all opinions are my own

If there's something I really fail at and that is the amount of water I don't drink, I really should be drinking more than one little bottle per day, but plain water is just so boring ain't it, which in turn makes it so hard to drink even though it benefits your skin and health loads.

So when an email from Waterdrop found its way into my inbox and they wanted to send me a little package, I was more than happy to agree, only after I read what they were about and what waterdrop stands for, and it really appealed to me and was something I was generally interested in.

So firstly I bet you're asking "what is waterdrop"?!

Waterdrop is the taste of both natural fruits and plants to enhance the best drink, which is pure water. It also includes valuable vitamins as well as being zero sugar and all packed into a tiny microdrink, which is good for those that are on the go but still wanting to keep hydrated throughout the day.

waterdrop, hydrated, water, drinking cubes, microdrink

So far I have tried the Focus drink microdrinks and also the Defence microdrinks and they definitely do make drinking water that little bit easier as it gives it a subtle hint of the flavours without being too overpowering like some flavoured waters can be.

The other thing that I really like about this company as the bottles that they sell aren't all made of plastic, the actual bottle is glass and comes in a variety of designs which can be used over and over again! In each box of drinking microdrinks, you get 12 individually packed microdrinks, so they are easy enough to carry around in your bag throughout the day whenever you feel like you want to add some flavour to your water.

Waterdrop comes in a variety of flavours which each have a variety of healthy vitamins which are listed below:

- Clean: juniper berry - stinging nettle and herbs

- Glow: mango - cactus fruit - artichoke

- Youth: dandelion - ginseng - peach - ginger

- Zen: lemongrass - starfruit - white tea

- Relax: aronia - hibiscus - acerola

- Boost: acal - blackcurrant - elderflower

- Defence: cranberry - rosehip - moringa

- Focus: lime - acerola - baobab

Current Netflix Picks

I have really been getting myself into a routine just lately and instead of going on my iPhone at night and endlessly scrolling through Instagram and Facebook, instead, I've been catching up on all the programmes that I have saved in my watch list on Netflix.

Here are three of the programmes that I've been loving just lately:

The Stranger

It follows the lives of suburban families whose secrets and lies are made public by the appearance of a stranger. Husband Adam Price is left stunned when a stranger tells him his wife faked her last pregnancy, which she had claimed she had miscarried

I got obsessed with this pretty much straight away and completely finished it all within a week, this is one of those programmes that really hasn't been spoken about as much as it should be. It definitely gets you hooked right from the first episode, and always leaves you wondering what's going to happen next.

Line Of Duty

Line Of Duty is a crime drama which first aired in 2012. It follows the work of AC-12 a special unit charged with investigating corruption within the police force.

This programme was recommended to me for months before I finally took a chance on it and actually decided to watch it, and I'm so glad I actually did! I have already finished watching seasons 1 to 4, and am about to start season 5 on the BBC iPlayer in the next few days before season 6 starts later on this year.

Unforgotten

The programme follows two London detectives, DCI Cassie Stuart (Nicola Walker) and DI Sunny Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar), as they solve cold cases of disappearance and murder. Each series deals with a new case, introducing seemingly unconnected characters who are gradually revealed to have some relationship with the victim.

This programme showed up as a recommendation after I had finished Line Of Duty, and once again it had me hooked right from the first episode. I'm pretty sure that this should have been the career path I should have chosen, as these types of programmes always fascinate me with how they work out who the killer is and get justice for the relatives of the victim who was killed.

I still have quite a few other programmes to get through, so I'm thinking of doing one of these blog posts every few months, to show what I've been loving,

If there are any programmes that you think I would like, then please leave me a comment below and let me know :-)

January Birchbox

Everyone who reads my blog will probably be sat there thinking "why birchbox when you are an avid fan of the Glossybox Claire". Well basically I signed up just before Christmas to get the special offer of 2 for £5 and I forgot to cancel the January box and by the time I remembered, well it was too late the money had already come out of my account haha.

I have now cancelled my Birchbox subscription so I won't be receiving the February box, which means I can go back to "shopping my stash" as I like to call it and start using up all the beauty/skincare products that I currently already own!

So let's take a look at what I received in my Birchbox this month:

The Beauty Crop: Glow Milk in Just Dew It

I hate to say it but I'm really not a fan of any type of liquid highlighter anymore, so I was kind of disappointed to see this inside of this months box, Will I attempt to try it? Probably not! So I may just give this away to someone who will actually use it instead of just throwing it away.

Eyeko - Sport Waterproof Mascara

There's not much to say about this product, to me mascara is simply just that... a mascara haha. This could be though because I can't actually use mascara as I literally have the most sensitive of eyes, and the slightest things make them really irritated. So my sister is claiming this one for herself which I don't mind, as it's something she uses daily, so it's not going to be going to waste with her having it.

Greenfrog Botanic - Argan Oil Body Lotion

During the colder month's of the year, I find my skin tends to get really dry, especially around my elbows, so I do love a nice moisturising body lotion. I already have a few lotions on the go at the minute though, so I will be adding this one into my skincare drawer to try at a later date.

Sebamed - Clear Face Gentle Scrub

I do love getting skincare products inside beauty boxes, as most of the time it is introducing me to brands that I have never heard of before. This one says it "removes oil, impurities and dirt to leave you with a healthy, happy complexion", so I will definitely be interested in testing this out very soon to see if it does just that.

Melusine - Jade Roller

This is the item in this months box that I was the most excited about, mainly because I have read some really good reviews about jade rollers in the past. It reduces puffiness in the morning as well as boosting radiance and tightening pores, it also says by rolling the tool across your forehead and under your cheekbones and jaw, it's a fast track to flawless skin. So I will be intrigued to see if I notice any difference in my skin after using this daily for a while.

♥ 2020 Goals ♥

This blog post is only fourteen days late as we are already well into January 2020, but hey it's better late than never right?! This year I decided just to set myself four small goals that I know will be achievable if I put my mind to it, so I thought I would share them on my blog so I can look back at them at the end of the year to see how I've done, and more so if I managed to achieve them.

More Self Care

To start off a new year, I am gonna be focusing the month of January taking more care of myself, both physically and mentally. I am gonna make sure I have a little pamper session each week which will include face masks, hair masks, doing my nails and all that sort of stuff. I have so many products that I want to start using and what better time to do it than the start of 2020.

Goodreads Challenge

Last year over on GoodReads I set myself a challenge which was to read 20 books by the end of 2019, I done pretty well and managed to read 14 out of 20 which ain't bad for me considering what our family went through. So for the year of 2020, I am gonna do the exact same challenge and start from scratch, and now that I have the Kindle app on my phone I will hopefully be able yo complete it this year!

Blog More

I am really looking forward to getting back into writing more for my blog this year and really start putting more effort into producing blog content that I am proud of. I have so many ideas going round in my head with what I want to post, so I need to start putting my plans into actions and just get it done, and hopefully, those that read my blog will enjoy the new content.

Work On My Social Anxiety

It's no lie that I suffer really badly with social anxiety, and it is something I have talked about over on my blog before, which you can see that post in full here. This year though I am determined to work on improving my social anxiety and start doing stuff that gets me out of my comfort zone, I made a promise to my sister when I went to see her in the chapel of rest, and put a letter in with her next to her hand which only me and her will know what was written in that, and I am determined to keep my promise to her no matter how long it takes.
